Great Hill Frog Quest

Your task on this hike is to find twelve little frogs,
You might find them on trees, you might find them on logs.
They won’t turn into princes, so avoid kissing them you should,
but follow their clues and learn all about these woods!

Atop a post sits frog number one,
He waits to lead you to some great fun.
The post stands at the head of the trail,
At the back of the lot along the woods where he hails.

On a tree in the path find Frog number two,
Turn left where two evergreens will be near you.
One looks like a Christmas tree - Spruce it must be,
The smaller pine with five needle spells W-H-I-T-E.

Frog number three has found a small home,
I wonder who lives here and where she does roam.
The house is in the base of an old stump,
Be careful you do not trip on the lump.

Frog number four sits on a red oak tree,
With another tree near, they make the shape of a “V”.
Covering their trunks are lichens and fungi,
Look up and down, for it grows low and high.

Find Frog number five below double patches of red,
After the clue you must turn RIGHT and continue ahead.
Before you go, look down to the right of your feet,
Two evergreen plants for you to meet.
Little white pine will soon grow quite tall,
Lowly lycopodium, once a great giant, now remains small.

Frog number six sits on a rock with a snack,
Someone’s been opening lots of nut with a crack.
There are acorns and hickory nuts all around,
Can you find the trees from which they came down?
Frog number seven is on your right on a tree that is dead,
But look to the right and up ahead.
Here a big proud old pine tree stands very fast,
It wasn’t chopped down for a ship’s mast in the past.

Now you’ve found frogs near trees, rocks, and holes,
But in these same woods, you may find some trolls.
At the base of a tree, to the left you should look,
Can you find his funny face peaking from a small nook?

Turn right at the “T” to find Frog number eight,
On a tree with a yellow patch is where he will wait.
Take 15 steps down the trail to a rest,
Look up to your left to find a squirrel’s nest.

Frog number nine lives in a cool brook,
Which way does the water run, please take a look.
Find some big trees lying on the ground,
In 1992, Hurricane Bob blew them all down.

Frog number ten is on a tree with a yellow blaze,
Take a giant step backwards and to your right you should gaze.
There is a big pine tree that’s bark is quite split,
Did a bolt of lightening strike a big hit?

To find Frog number eleven, take no turns, just go straight,
He’s on a tree with a woodpecker hole right at eye height.
Peek around back to find a friend of froggy’s,
This mole salamander likes homes that are a bit soggy.

Frog number twelve is low to the ground,
You’ll find her on a dead tree that is down.
Near her find a bush with square bark,
It’s called burning bush, so watch out for the sparks!

Follow the rest of the frogs to the end of the trail.
They are off to the pond where some tadpoles do hail.
You’ve finished our quest and done a swell job,
Find a stamp at the map kiosk to put in your log.
